Slashfilm calls it the “best documentary of 2009″ and say that it “surpasses James Toback’s excellent doc on Mike Tyson”.

The Carter is a documentary about Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. aka Lil’ Wayne. An internationally known rapper, his most recent album went platinum in a week, and he just might be the voice of his generation. But this ain’t no VH1 rock doc. Rather, it is an intoxicating, cinematic journey into the thoughts and world of an extremely complicated man whose creative force is something to behold. He never stops recording. He has a portable studio that he carries around in a black bag, and it allows him to lay down a track anytime anywhere. It is his pressure valve and makes him a refreshing anomaly in a sea of manufactured prefab “”singers.”" His work is his own: unfiltered, uncensored, raw, and powerful. Director Adam Bhala Lough, whose fiction film Weapons premiered in competition at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, has unbelievable access to Lil’ Wayne’s public and private lives. He captures remarkably candid moments, such as Lil’ Wayne recounting his first sexual experience, as well as him talking openly about his drug habits. Following him all over the country and to Amsterdam, Lough mixes fly-on-the-wall footage of Lil’ Wayne in his hotel room and on his bus with artfully composed concert footage. BlakRoc – The Black Keys, Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, and the list goes on

The Black Keys and some of the biggest names in hip-hop will release an album under the name Blakroc. on Nov. 27th 2009. The project was spearheaded by rapper Jim Jones and also sports contributions from Mos Def, Q-Tip, RZA, Raekwon, Ludacris, Pharoahe Monch, NOE, Nicole Wray, Billy Danze and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

“Illinoize is a free remix tape put together by Montreal-based producer Tor, sampling songs from multi-instrumentalist and indie hero, Sufjan Stevens. Tracks are sampled from his 2005 LP Illinoise, as well as 3 of his other albums, ‘A Sun Came’, ‘Seven Swans’ and ‘Songs for Christmas’, blending Sufjan Steven’s acoustic guitar, piano and horns with MC’s Aesop Rock, Big Daddy Kane, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious), C.L. Smooth, Outkast, Brother Ali, and Grand Puba.”

You don’t have to be a fan of Sufjan Stevens to enjoy this mix. Some great lyrics over mellow beats. A quality mashup.

Proton + free mixtape

I’ve been recommending these guys for a month or so. Their mixtape has replay value and has some pretty solid tracks all for a nice price of $0.00. Original and non-generic hiphop. Part of this new sound shared by the likes of kid cudi and the cool kids (sounds inspired by a post kanye world – whether they want to admit to it or not).
